Narrating the Classics
It can be difficult to narrating revered literature or creating a persona for some of its best-known characters. This is exactly the challenge in this week’s Workout Wednesday – Narrating the Classics.
With some help from our friends at Voices.com, we test our abilities with excerpts from Moby Dick and Sherlock Holmes. While we may not be the modern-day Ishmael or Holmes, it was certainly a fun exercise vocally and gave us plenty to think about.
Narrating as a character is more than just creating a voice. There is much thought that goes into what the character is feeling, what the situation is around them, and how that person would act or speak in those circumstances.
You're narrating... again?
Much like we did last week when we read the fairy tale scripts, We are telling someone else’s story. The difference this week is that we told more of these classic stories as the characters themselves.
Narrating skills are about way more than just reading the words. The listener has to believe you are there, you are that character, in that time, place, and having those emotions.Â
Next week, we join the rest of America by talking about the holidays way too early. That’s right, we’re reading holiday-themed scripts!
